Get a lift home on a MAIB Nightrider bus this New Year’s Eve

Media Release

27 December 2024

MAIB and Metro are encouraging Tasmanians to take advantage of half-price bus fares and the extra Nightrider services this New Year’s Eve in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart.

The two organisations are encouraging partygoers to catch a bus to their party or celebration, relax, enjoy themselves and then get home safely on a Nightrider Metro bus at the end of the night.

MAIB CEO Paul Kingston said the Nightrider initiative was just one of several road safety initiatives supported by MAIB.

“Helping to prevent death and serious injury on our roads is of critical importance to the MAIB,” he said.

“This is a great initiative and provides a cheap and accessible transport option to get home safely after a night of celebrations.”

Metro CEO Katie Cooper said the Nightrider services encouraged Tasmanians to leave their car at home and take the bus to and from their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” she said.

“So, as a public transport operator, we are pleased to once again provide this important transport option to get people home safely.”

The road safety initiative is supported by the Road Safety Advisory Council.

Chair Scott Tilyard encouraged revellers to plan ahead to ensure a safe and enjoyable night of celebrations.

“If you’re heading out to celebrate New Year’s Eve, we strongly encourage you to leave the car at home and take advantage of Metro’s Nightrider service,” he said.

“It’s a responsible choice that not only ensures your safety but everyone else on the road.

“If you are planning on drinking, make sure driving isn’t part of your plan.”

Payment can be made with cash or GreenCard. Customers can plan their NYE trips using the Metro Trip Planner or Metro’s Nightrider timetables.
