NHVR Approves Metro Security Screens

As part of Metro’s ongoing strategic efforts to keep our bus drivers and customers safe, we are pleased to share that the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has granted Metro an exemption to install security screens on our fleet. This approval marks a significant step in Metro’s commitment to enhancing the safety of our bus operators.

On 4 April 2025, Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, and Metro’s Chief Operating Officer, Darren Turner, shared the news of this exemption, highlighting it as an important step forward in Metro’s wider strategy to address the community issue of anti-social behaviour.

This exemption is the first of its kind in Australia. It confirms that Metro’s security screen design meets strict safety standards and can be installed in buses before the national safety standards are finalised.

Metro has conducted extensive field testing and consultation with staff and industry to ensure the screens meet our drivers’ needs.

Metro is proud to partner with a preferred local supplier, Havnadip Bus Repairs, for the production and staged rollout of the security screens.

The new screens join Metro’s existing suite of strategic security measures including arrangements with Tasmania Police, CCTV cameras on all buses, and internal safety programs.
